Private health insurance bungle

THE Health Department is investigating a glitch that meant Royal Adelaide Hospital nurses were unable to claim on health insurance payments.

The Sunday Mail has learnt that deductions from nurses' salaries had not been passed on to insurance firm Bupa for more than a month.

Officials were unable to explain the cause of the problem, how many people were affected, if it affected people beyond the Health Department, how much money was involved or what happened to the money.

In one case, an RAH nurse was contacted by her husband during the week to say that his private health insurance card with Bupa had been declined by his dentist.

"I went to Bupa's Unley office to find out what was going on and was told by office staff I was the second person from the RAH to come in after having their card declined," the nurse said.

"They told me they had not received any payments since January 16 and were holding claims until they received the payments, although they said I was still covered.

"I was furious - I am on the top family cover with extras and have $249.50 taken out of my pay every fortnight and have no idea what has happened to that money."

SA Health chief executive David Swan said: "Bupa has confirmed they will honour any outstanding claims and I will also ensure that no nurse will lose out financially on any health-related costs caused by this issue."
